Diaper Bags for Twins: One Bag, Packed for Two
Use one large backpack diaper bag, not two small ones. With twins your hands are what you run out of, and a backpack leaves both free for two car seats, two babies or a double stroller. Double the things each baby uses up: diapers, bottles, a spare outfit and a pacifier. Keep the rest single: one changing pad, one pack of wipes, one wet bag. Look for at least two insulated bottle pockets, a wide opening, and stroller straps. The three bags below all have those.
What to double, what to keep single
Packing for twins goes faster once you sort the list into “per baby” and “shared”. Betteroo’s single-baby packing list is a good base. This is how it splits for two:
| Per baby (pack two) | Shared (pack one) |
|---|---|
| Diapers | Changing pad |
| Bottles, or a measured feed each | Wipes |
| A full spare outfit | Diaper cream |
| A pacifier, if they use one | Hand sanitizer |
| A burp cloth | A wet bag for dirty clothes |
| Disposable bags for diapers | |
| A top for you |
Colour-code everything in the per-baby column, so a bottle grabbed in a hurry goes to the right twin. Coral for A and teal for B works if you already use it at home.
How much to pack for an outing
Betteroo’s packing guide suggests “about one diaper for every hour or two you expect to be out, plus two spares.” For twins, count that per baby:
- A two-hour errand: about 2 diapers each plus 2 spares each, so 6 to 8 in total.
- A half-day out: about 3 to 4 each plus spares, so 10 to 12 in total.
For daily counts by age, see how many diapers twins use.
Bottles work the same way. The AAP’s formula amounts page describes feeds about every 3 to 4 hours by the end of the first month. Pack one feed per baby for each feed time you will be out, plus one spare portion of powder. Powder in a two-pack of Munchkin three-compartment dispensers takes up less room than made-up bottles, and gives each twin their own. The AAP says to throw out prepared formula within 1 hour after a feed starts, so mix it when the baby is ready. For each twin’s amounts, see how much formula twins need.
Backpack or tote?
A backpack, for most twin families. You are often carrying a car seat in each hand, or one baby in your arms and a stroller handle in the other. A shoulder tote slips off just as you bend to buckle a harness. A backpack stays put and leaves both hands free.
A tote works when the bag stays on the stroller. If you drive everywhere and the bag goes straight from the trunk into the stroller basket, a tote’s wide top is easier to rummage in. Check your basket’s limit first. Baby Jogger, for example, publishes a 15 lb basket limit for the City Mini GT2 Double, as noted in the twin stroller roundup, and a full twin bag eats into that quickly.
Skip the second bag. The leaving-the-house system lists a second diaper bag among the things that help less than promised. Two bags means two things to forget and no free hands.
Three backpacks with room for two
None of these is twin-specific, and twin parents don’t need one that is. What matters is capacity, at least two insulated bottle pockets, and a way to hang the bag on a stroller.
JuJuBe Classic Diaper Backpack
JuJuBe’s product page lists 15 pockets, including two insulated bottle pockets, a cushioned changing pad, removable stroller straps, a trolley sleeve for luggage, and a machine-washable body. The two insulated pockets suit twins, one per baby. Machine washing helps the first time two blowouts happen on the same trip. One caveat: the “Details” section on that page gives dimensions and a strap description that contradict its own feature list, so we have not printed a size. Check the listing before you buy if fit in your stroller basket matters. It is on Amazon as the JuJuBe Classic Diaper Bag Backpack.
Skip Hop Forma Backpack
A retailer listing at MacroBaby gives the Forma as 16 x 14 x 8 inches, with an insulated packing cube for bottles, a mesh cube for clothes, insulated side bottle pockets, a cushioned changing pad, stroller straps and room for a laptop. The packing cubes make the per-baby system easy: put one twin’s outfit and burp cloth in the mesh cube, and keep the bottles together in the insulated one. Skip Hop Forma Backpack on Amazon.
Itzy Ritzy Boss Plus
The largest of the three by pocket count. Its Amazon listing describes 19 pockets, two insulated bottle pockets, a changing pad and stroller clips. Itzy Ritzy’s own product page returned an error when checked in October 2026, so those figures come from the listing, not from the maker. Choose this one if you prefer every item in its own pocket over a big open main section. Itzy Ritzy Boss Plus on Amazon.
Which to pick: the Forma if you want packing cubes for a two-baby system; the JuJuBe if you want machine washing and a trolley sleeve; the Boss Plus if you want the most pockets.
One add-on worth having
A sealed wet bag. With two babies, a blowout and a spit-up can happen on the same outing, and wet clothes need somewhere to go that is not the main compartment. A zip wet bag like the Itzy Ritzy Sealed Wet Bag keeps them sealed in until you are home.
Restock it the same day
The bag that lets you down is the one nobody restocked. Refill it as soon as you get home: diapers back up to count, a fresh outfit for each twin, a feed’s worth of powder each, and the wipes checked. Re-check the spare outfits every few weeks, because twins outgrow sizes at different times, and a spare outfit that no longer fits is no use.
FAQ: diaper bags and twins
Do you need two diaper bags for twins?
No. One larger backpack is easier than two bags, because it leaves your hands free. Pack two of what each baby uses up, such as diapers, bottles and a spare outfit, and one of everything shared.
What size diaper bag do twins need?
Big enough for a half-day for two: about 10 to 12 diapers, a feed for each baby, two spare outfits, a changing pad and a wet bag. Look for at least two insulated bottle pockets and a wide opening.
Is a backpack or a tote better for twins?
A backpack, for most outings, because you are often carrying two car seats or holding a baby and pushing a stroller. A tote works when the bag rides in the stroller basket the whole time.
