How Many Diapers Do Twins Use? Size-by-Size Math
Newborn twins use roughly 16 to 24 diapers a day between them, because each baby goes through about 8 to 12. That falls to around 12 to 16 a day by the end of the first year. Over the newborn size and Size 1 together, a pair can get through up to about 1,900 diapers. Buy by size, not by age, because twins often weigh different amounts and move up a size at different times. Hold off on a big stock of the smallest size until you know what each baby weighs.
The figures below are Pampers’ own estimates, which are the most detailed published counts. Read them as ranges rather than rules. Your twins will set their own pace.
Diapers per day, by age
From Pampers’ guide to how many diapers a day, doubled for two:
| Age | Per baby, per day | Twins, per day | Twins, per week |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 1 month | about 8 to 12 | 16 to 24 | about 110 to 170 |
| 2 to 4 months | about 8 to 10 | 16 to 20 | about 110 to 140 |
| 5 to 8 months | about 7 to 9 | 14 to 18 | about 100 to 125 |
| 9 to 12 months | about 6 to 8 | 12 to 16 | about 85 to 110 |
The newborn row lines up with the “around 20 a day between them” in the twin registry checklist. Twins don’t follow the same pattern as each other, either. One may be a two-diapers-per-feed baby while the other is not, and a per-baby diaper column in the A|B feeding and sleep log shows that within a few days.
Diaper counts are also a feeding signal. Pampers’ newborn guide gives the early pattern as at least 1 wet diaper on day 1, about 2 on day 2, about 3 on day 3, and “6 or more wet diapers per day” by day 5. Log each twin separately. A baby with clearly fewer wet diapers than usual is a reason to call the pediatrician, whatever the other twin is doing.
Size by size: how many to expect
Diaper sizes go by weight, not age. Pampers’ size and weight chart gives each size a weight range, an “up to” daily count and a typical number of months in that size. Multiplying those out gives an upper estimate per size:
| Size | Weight | Up to per day | Months in size | Per baby (approx.) | Twins (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Newborn | under 10 lb | 10 | 1.6 | 490 | 970 |
| Size 1 | 8 to 14 lb | 9 | 1.7 | 470 | 930 |
| Size 2 | 10 to 22 lb | 8 | 2.8 | 680 | 1,360 |
| Size 3 | 13 to 26 lb | 7 | 5.8 | 1,230 | 2,470 |
Two things push these numbers around for twins:
- Many twins are born small. Pampers lists preemie sizes for babies under 6 pounds, with daily use “as needed.” A pair who start in preemie diapers may spend less time in the newborn size, or skip it.
- Sizes overlap, and twins split. A Size 1 runs 8 to 14 pounds and a Size 2 runs 10 to 22. A 9-pound twin and an 11-pound twin can both wear Size 1 for a while, but the bigger one will usually move up first. Expect weeks with two sizes open in the house.
The table is an estimate made from estimates. Use it to plan roughly how many boxes you need, not to count diapers exactly.
How much to buy before they arrive
Pampers’ own advice is “plan ahead, but don’t overstock,” because sizes change quickly in the first year. That matters more with twins, who may come early and small, and at different weights.
- Newborn size: a box or two, not a closet full. You don’t know the birth weights yet, and twins who start in preemie diapers may barely use the newborn size.
- Size 1 and Size 2: this is where to stock up. Most twins spend months in these sizes. The registry checklist’s advice to weight the order toward Size 1 rather than newborn rests on the same reasoning.
- Keep receipts and leave boxes unopened. Some stores will exchange an unopened box for another size, so check the policy before you buy, and see twin gear returns for running returns for two babies.
- Check twin programs before you buy in bulk. Some free-stuff programs take requests for multiples. Twin freebies: when to call covers when to start asking and what paperwork to have ready.
Running the supply day to day
- Buy the big box in the current size. A box like the Pampers Swaddlers Size 1, 198 count lasts twins at about 9 each per day roughly 11 days. Count your boxes by how many days they last you, not by how many diapers they hold.
- Reorder when one box is left, not when the last box is open. With twins a box goes quickly, and the night it runs out is a bad time to find out.
- Split the stock when two sizes are open. Keep each twin’s size in its own spot at the changing station, so nobody grabs the wrong one at 3 a.m.
- Wipes add up too. Pampers estimates newborns use about 20 to 30 wipes a day, which comes to 40 to 60 for two.
FAQ: diapers and twins
How many diapers do newborn twins use a day?
About 16 to 24 between them, based on Pampers’ estimate of 8 to 12 per baby per day in the first month. It eases to roughly 16 to 20 a day by 2 to 4 months.
How many newborn-size diapers should I buy for twins?
Not many before birth. Pampers’ chart gives the newborn size about 1.6 months of use at up to 10 a day per baby, which is roughly 970 for two at the top end. But many twins are born small enough for preemie diapers, and many grow out of the newborn size quickly, so buy a box or two and get more once you know their weights.
Do twins wear the same diaper size?
Often for a while, since the sizes overlap. But diapers go by weight, and twins frequently weigh different amounts, so it is common for one twin to move up a size weeks before the other.
