Car Seats for Twins: Two Seats, One Back Seat

Car Seats for Twins: Two Seats, One Back Seat

Twins need two rear-facing infant car seats from the first ride home, and three questions decide which two. Will they fit side by side in your back seat? Do they start low enough for small babies? Do they click into the twin stroller frame you plan to use? Below are four infant seats with their makers’ published widths and minimum weights. Two of them side by side take roughly 33 to 35 inches of seat width. All four start at 4 lb. Only two appear on the Joovy Twin Roo+ chart. Installation is a job for a certified child passenger safety technician (CPST). If either twin was born early, the hospital screens them in the seat before discharge.

Four infant seats, by the numbers that matter for two

All figures are from each maker’s own product page, checked October 2026. Width is the maker’s published total width of the carrier.

What the makers add that matters with twins:

  • Chicco KeyFit 35. Chicco lists a “newborn head and body positioner” for babies of 4 to 11 lb. The carrier weighs 10 lb and the base 8.5 lb. Of the four, it has the narrowest published width.
  • Clek Liing. Clek bills it as a “narrow design” that “makes 3-across seating possible”, which matters if an older sibling needs the third seat. Its base carries a built-in load leg (Clek).
  • UPPAbaby Mesa V3. It includes an infant insert for babies “weighing as little as 4 lbs” (UPPAbaby). Baby Trend’s Snap-N-Go note says “fit verified with the original MESA. The MESA 2 and MESA V3 have not been tested for compatibility.”
  • Nuna PIPA rx. Nuna says to remove the infant insert “when your child weighs 11 lbs.” Joovy’s Twin Roo+ chart lists the PIPA lite but not the PIPA rx.

The Chicco KeyFit 30 (4 to 30 lb) is worth knowing too, because it is on more twin-frame lists than any seat above. It is on the Baby Trend, Mountain Buggy and Joovy lists. Chicco’s comparison page does not publish its width, so it is not in the table.

Two seats, one back seat

The width math. Two seats from the table above take roughly 33 inches (two KeyFit 35s) to 35 inches (two PIPA rx) side by side, measured at each carrier’s widest point. Measure your back-seat cushion where the seats will sit, not the cabin, before you buy. Then fit the actual seats in the actual car before the due date. A seat that fits on paper can still block a buckle or a belt.

Which positions. The AAP’s car seat guidance for families says “it may be best for the child to ride in the middle of the back seat” if possible. It adds that “many vehicles do not have lower anchors for the middle seating position”, and that the safest place is “a position where you can install it tightly with either the lower anchor system or the seat belt.” Two babies cannot both sit in the middle, so twin families usually choose between two layouts:

  • Both outboard. Side positions are where many vehicles put their lower anchors, and this leaves the middle free for an adult or a bag.
  • Middle plus one side. This is possible where your manual allows a seat-belt install in the middle. It gives one twin the middle position, but the two seats sit closer together.

Your vehicle owner’s manual says which positions can take a car seat and how. The AAP’s advice is that a CPST “can help you decide which place is best”. With two seats, book that check for both, in one visit.

Install each seat on its own. The AAP’s tightness test is per seat: “if you can move the seat at the belt path more than an inch side to side or front to back, it’s not tight enough.” Two seats pressed against each other can feel solid when one of them is loose, so test each one separately.

Both rear-facing, both in the back. The AAP says infants “should ride rear-facing, starting with their first ride home from the hospital”, and never in front of an active front passenger airbag.

Bases: count them before you buy

Infant seats click into a base that stays in the car. The AAP notes that “parents can buy more than one base for additional vehicles.” With twins, the count doubles: two cars means four bases if both cars carry both babies. Seats are usually sold with one base, so budget for extra bases rather than reinstalling them at the curb. Each base needs its own correct install.

Small and preterm twins

Twins often arrive small, so a 4 lb minimum matters. Use the infant insert exactly as the maker describes, until the weight the maker states, and add nothing that did not come with the seat. The AAP says not to use “any sort of car safety seat insert unless it came with the seat or was made by the manufacturer for use with that specific seat.”

For preterm babies, the AAP says a seat “should be approved for a baby’s weight”. It adds that “babies born preterm should be screened while still in the hospital to make sure they can sit safely in a semi-reclined position.” Babies who need to lie flat may ride in a car bed that meets federal standard 213. Twins can be screened on different days and can get different answers. If one twin comes home first, the one twin home, one in the NICU guide covers running both locations. The NICU team, not a product page, decides whether a twin travels in a seat or a car bed.

Which seats click into which twin frame

If you plan to use a car-seat frame stroller, the frame’s own list decides your seats. The table above shows how differently the lists read today:

  • Joovy Twin Roo+ (chart from the product page): a dot for the KeyFit 30 family and the KeyFit 35 under the Chicco adapter. Clek Liing, Cybex Aton models and most Maxi-Cosi Mico models fall under the Maxi-Cosi/Cybex/Nuna adapter, and Graco SnugRide models under the Graco adapter.
  • Baby Trend Snap-N-Go Double (compatibility list): Baby Trend’s own seats, the Chicco KeyFit 30, Peg Perego Primo Viaggio 4-35, the original UPPAbaby MESA, Evenflo Litemax 30 and Safety 1st onBoard LT.
  • Mountain Buggy universal adaptor (Mountain Buggy), used two at a time on the Duet: lists the Chicco Keyfit 30, Nuna Pipa, several Maxi-Cosi and Cybex seats, and Graco SnugRide models, with a 28 lb adaptor weight limit.

Buying two of the same seat is not required, but it means one adapter type, one manual and one set of straps to learn at 2 a.m. The stroller side of this, including bassinets and how long a baby can stay in a seat on a frame, is in twin strollers for newborns.

What happens next

Infant seats are outgrown per baby: at the weight limit, the height limit or the manual’s head-clearance rule, whichever comes first. Twins rarely hit them together. The next seat is a convertible installed rear-facing. Betteroo’s guide to moving on from the infant seat walks through those limits. Convertibles are bulkier and stay in the car, so the back-seat width math above starts again with bigger numbers. What else you need two of is in the twin registry checklist, and the daily loading routine is in how to leave the house with twins.

FAQ: car seats for twins

Do twins need two infant car seats?

Yes. Each baby rides in their own rear-facing seat from the first ride home. Both seats go in the back seat.

Can you fit two infant car seats in the back of a car?

In most cars, yes. Two seats from the table above take roughly 33 to 35 inches of seat width side by side. Measure your back seat, test-fit the actual seats, and have a CPST check both installs.

What is the best car seat for small or preterm twins?

Choose a seat whose stated minimum covers your babies’ weight; all four above start at 4 lb. Preterm babies are screened in the hospital before discharge, and the NICU team decides whether a baby can ride semi-reclined or needs a car bed.

Do both twins’ car seats have to fit the same stroller frame?

If you plan to use a twin car-seat frame, yes. Check both seats against that frame’s current compatibility list before you buy either one.
