Cribs for Twins: Two Cribs, One Room, What Fits
Twins need two cribs, and for the first months both should be in your room. The AAP gives every baby their own sleep surface, twins included, and recommends room sharing for at least the first six months. So the real buying question is what fits. Two full-size cribs side by side take a floor area of roughly 4.5 by 5 feet before you add a gap. Two mini cribs save about 15 inches of length and a few inches of width. Below: four cribs measured from their makers’ own spec pages, the layout math for two, and how to run two mattress heights at once.
The rule first: two cribs, not one
The AAP’s parent’s guide to safe sleep asks for a crib, bassinet, portable crib or play yard “that meets the safety standards”. It says to make sure the mattress “is designed for your specific crib and that it fits tightly”, with a fitted sheet only. It recommends room sharing “for at least the first 6 months of life”, and it names twins when it rules out bed sharing. How that applies to two babies, including why one crib with a divider does not count as two surfaces, is in safe sleep for twins.
That leaves you with two cribs to choose. They do not have to match.
Four cribs, measured from the maker’s specs
All figures below are the assembled dimensions each maker publishes on its own product page, checked October 2026.
| Crib | Type | Footprint (L x W) | Mattress positions | Converts to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Delta Children Emery 4-in-1 | Full-size convertible | 55.75 x 30.25 in | 3 | Toddler bed, daybed, full-size bed |
| Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1 | Full-size convertible | 53.75 x 29.75 in | 4 | Toddler bed, daybed |
| Dream On Me Aden 4-in-1 | Mini, convertible | 39 x 28 in | 3 | Mini daybed, twin bed |
| Babyletto Origami | Mini, folding, on wheels | 39.25 x 25.75 in | 2 | Does not convert |
What each maker says about the details a twin household trips on:
- Delta Children Emery. “Uses a standard size crib mattress (sold separately)”. It converts to a toddler bed, daybed and full-size bed, with the “daybed rail included; toddler guardrail & full size bed frame sold separately”. Delta’s advice on the mattress support is to “start with the highest setting and lower as baby grows” (Delta Children).
- Babyletto Hudson. It comes with “an included toddler bed conversion kit”, which matters when you are buying two. Babyletto lists it as “suitable from newborn up to 4 years old” (Babyletto).
- Dream On Me Aden. It ships with a 1-inch mattress pad. Dream On Me recommends adding one of its mini or portable crib mattresses for “the perfect fit”. The twin-bed conversion needs rails and a frame that are sold separately. Its own copy names it for families who “have multiple babies to tend to” (Dream On Me).
- Babyletto Origami. It folds for storage and rolls on removable locking casters. Babyletto says it is “safe to use until 35” tall or starting to climb”, and it takes Babyletto’s mini crib mattress, listed at 37 x 23.5 in (Babyletto).
The floor-space math for two
The numbers below are the two cribs alone. Add whatever gap you want between them. Our planning gap is one you can stand in sideways with a baby in your arms, because you will be lifting one twin out while the other sleeps.
| Layout | Two Emerys | Two Hudsons | Two Adens | Two Origamis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Side by side (long sides parallel) | 55.75 deep x 60.5 wide + gap | 53.75 x 59.5 + gap | 39 x 56 + gap | 39.25 x 51.5 + gap |
| End to end along one wall | 111.5 long x 30.25 deep + gap | 107.5 x 29.75 + gap | 78 x 28 + gap | 78.5 x 25.75 + gap |
All figures in inches. Three things fall out of those rows.
Side by side is the compact shape. It is also the one with the most even view from your bed: both cribs face the same way and you reach both from one spot.
End to end needs a long wall. Two full-size cribs end to end need more than nine feet of clear wall before any gap. Two minis need about six and a half. In a parents’ bedroom that already holds a bed, a dresser and a door swing, that difference often decides the layout.
An L in a corner puts one crib along each wall, heads near the corner. It uses floor space that a bed or dresser usually cannot. The cribs then sit at right angles, so check that you can reach both from where you will actually stand at 3 a.m.
Before you buy, mark the two footprints on the floor with painter’s tape. Then walk the route from your bed to each crib, and from each crib to the door, in the dark.
Full-size convertible, or mini first?
Two minis fit the room-sharing months in a bedroom that cannot take two full-size cribs. They also outlast a bassinet. They are not standardized, though: a mini needs the mattress made for that crib. The Origami carries a stated exit point of 35 inches tall or starting to climb, and that will arrive at different times for each twin. Most families who start with minis buy two full-size cribs or move to beds later, so you are paying twice for some of the same years.
Two full-size convertibles are a one-time purchase that can run into toddler beds. They take any standard full-size crib mattress, which makes replacements and spare sheets simple. The cost is the footprint: in a smaller parents’ bedroom, two of them may simply not fit for the first six months.
A mixed plan is common and perfectly fine: two bassinets or minis in your room now, then two full-size cribs in the nursery when the room-sharing months end. The bassinet stage and its limits are in twin bassinets. The triggers for moving on, which arrive per baby, are in when twins outgrow the shared crib.
Mattress heights: each twin on their own clock
Every crib above has an adjustable mattress support, from two positions on the Origami to four on the Hudson. Babyletto’s guidance is to lower it “as babe learns to sit and stand”. Delta’s is to start at the highest setting and lower it as baby grows.
With twins, that milestone arrives per baby. One twin pulling to stand means that crib drops a level, even if the other crib stays high for weeks. Plan for two cribs at two different heights for a while. Write each crib’s current setting somewhere you will see it, because the mismatch is easy to forget when you swap which parent does bedtime.
Two mattresses, the right size
Two cribs means two mattresses and at least four fitted sheets. Full-size cribs all take a standard full-size crib mattress. Minis do not share a standard size, so buy the mattress each maker specifies. Betteroo’s explainer on how full-size and mini crib mattresses are sized covers the fit check: if more than two fingers fit between the mattress and the crib side, the mattress is too small. Do that check in both cribs, because a hand-me-down mattress in one of them is common with twins.
If either crib is secondhand, check its model against current standards and recalls before a baby sleeps in it. The AAP says not to use a crib that “doesn’t have instructions, is missing hardware or that’s broken.”
What we would skip
- “Twin cribs” and one-crib-for-two setups. These are oversized cribs, cribs with a centre divider, and inserts sold to split one mattress into two. None of them gives each baby a separate sleep surface the way two cribs do, so we do not link any of them. If you are considering one, put the question to your pediatrician, not to a product page.
- Matching sets at a twin premium. Two of the same model is tidy, not required. A new crib next to a checked hand-me-down is a legitimate twin nursery.
- Bumpers, padding and positioners in either crib. The AAP’s guidance is a fitted sheet only.
What else you need two of, and what you only need one of, is in the twin registry checklist.
FAQ: cribs for twins
Do twins need two cribs?
Yes. The AAP’s safe-sleep guidance gives each baby their own sleep surface, twins included. Same room is fine and is recommended for the first six months. The same crib is not.
Can two cribs fit in a small bedroom?
Often, if you choose the size to fit the room. Two full-size cribs side by side need roughly 55 by 60 inches plus a gap; two minis need roughly 39 by 52 to 56 inches plus a gap. Tape the footprints on the floor before you buy.
Are mini cribs safe for twins?
A mini crib that meets current standards is a separate, firm, flat sleep surface, like any crib. Use the mattress the maker specifies, and move each twin on at the maker’s stated limit.
Do twin cribs have to match?
No. Each crib only has to meet current standards on its own, with its own correctly sized mattress.
