Do Identical Twins Have the Same DNA and Fingerprints?
Two different answers, and people usually expect them to match. DNA: nearly the same, but not exactly — identical twins start from one fertilised egg, so their genomes are as close as two humans get, while small differences accumulate from the first cell divisions onward. Fingerprints: not the same, ever. The broad pattern type is heritable, so twin prints look alike at a glance, but the ridge detail forms in the womb under conditions no two fetuses share, and a fingerprint reader tells identical twins apart without difficulty. That is the whole answer; the rest is why, and what it means once they are home and you cannot tell which one you are holding.
Why “identical” was always an approximation
One egg, one sperm, one zygote that splits — everything after that split is copying, and copying makes errors. Every cell division carries a small chance of a mutation, and a mutation that happens before the split ends up in both twins, while one that happens after it ends up in only one.
An Icelandic team at deCODE Genetics sequenced hundreds of identical-twin pairs with their parents and children and published the numbers in Nature Genetics in 2021: monozygotic twins differed by an average of about 5.2 early developmental mutations, with a median of roughly 14 post-zygotic differences overall. The spread is the interesting part — some pairs differed by none at all, and a small number differed by more than a hundred. So “identical twins have identical DNA” is a decent working approximation and a bad absolute.
Two more sources of divergence, neither of which is a mutation:
- Epigenetics. Chemical marks that switch genes on and off drift apart with age, diet, illness and environment. Same script, different annotations in the margins.
- Immune system rearrangement. The cells that make antibodies deliberately shuffle their own DNA to generate variety. Your twins’ immune repertoires are built independently and will never match.
What that means practically (which is: very little)
If you are wondering whether a zygosity test still works — it does. A cheek-swab twin zygosity test compares a large panel of variable markers, and a handful of post-zygotic differences among billions of base pairs does not move that result. Same-sex twins who come back “monozygotic” are monozygotic.
Where the near-identical-not-identical finding actually bites is in research and in forensics, both of which needed a way to distinguish two people whose standard DNA profiles matched. It has never mattered for a family’s daily life, and it does not mean anything about how alike your twins will be.
The everyday version of the question — which baby is which at 2am — is not a genetics problem at all. It is a systems problem, and the systems for telling newborn twins apart are ankle bands, painted toenails and a fixed left-right convention, all of which work regardless of zygosity.
The fingerprint half
Fingerprints begin forming in the second trimester, roughly weeks 10 through 24, when the ridged skin on the fingertips buckles into its permanent pattern. Genetics sets the broad template — whether you get loops, whorls or arches, and roughly how the ridges run. That is why identical twins’ prints are noticeably similar in type, and why a person guessing from the general shape would struggle.
The fine detail is a different matter. Where a ridge ends, where it splits, exactly how the pattern centres — those come from the mechanical conditions around each fingertip while the skin is buckling: pressure against the uterine wall, the position of the hand, blood flow to individual fingers, the movement of the amniotic fluid. Two fetuses cannot occupy the same space, so those conditions differ even inside one sac, and the resulting minutiae differ. Biometric systems match on minutiae, which is why identical twins do not unlock each other’s phones by fingerprint.
Worth saying plainly, because the same myth turns up in three shapes: identical twins also do not share retinal patterns, iris patterns, tooth arrangement, or the freckle and birthmark maps you will spend the first month memorising. Every one of those is shaped by the same random developmental noise as the fingerprints.
What the ultrasound actually told you
A common tangle that shows up in twin pregnancy groups: parents told they are having di-di twins conclude the babies are fraternal, and parents told mo-di conclude identical. Only the second is reliable.
Chorionicity describes the plumbing — how many placentas and sacs — not the genetics. All fraternal twins are di-di, but a minority of identical pairs are di-di too, when the egg splits within roughly the first three days. Is a zygosity test worth doing?
Honest answer: it is a curiosity purchase for most families, and there is no wrong choice. Reasons families give for doing it:
- Medical relevance later — organ or marrow donation between monozygotic twins is a different proposition, and some families want the answer on file rather than in an emergency.
- The children asking, and wanting a real answer rather than a hospital guess.
- Participation in twin research.
Reasons families skip it: the answer changes nothing about the next eighteen years, the delivery-room guess is right most of the time, and there is always something else to spend the money on when you are buying two of everything. We never tested — ours are boy/girl, so there was nothing to test.
